Speak with Confidence: Public Speaking and Presentation Skills for Creatives

Master stage presence with UWL School of Arts’ Public Speaking & Presentation skills training, specifically tailored for creatives. Learn rituals that manage stage fright, a simple talk structure, storytelling techniques, and performance hacks that are effective both on camera and stage………

It takes a huge amount of courage to stand on a stage in front of an audience, or before a camera, and give a talk or show. For writers, actors/actresses, and content creators, public speaking is far much more than just an act – it’s an extension of your work. A formidable stage presence also assists in landing gigs and building a loyal fan base.

At UWL School of Arts, our Public Speaking and Presentation course is designed for artists – practical, craft-driven, and aligned to real-world outcomes. The course serves as a compact playbook to help you combat stage fright, structure talks that have the desired effect, and the use of storytelling to make ideas stick.

Adopt Simple Rituals to Beat Stage Fright

Nerves aren’t the enemy. You can manage them with instant, repeatable routines;

  • Breathe; to calm your nervous system before stepping onstage, take three slow, deep diaphragmatic breaths
  • Warm-up session; conduct a 60-second vocal and physical warm-up – tongue twisters, shoulder rolls, stretches, the works
  • Anchor; state your purpose out loud – mention who will benefit and why. Purpose shifts enable you to turn your focus away from performance anxiety
  • Small exposures; practice short, friendly talks to incrementally build your self-confidence. These may include reading clubs, or participating in open mic sessions

Organize your Talk for Momentum and Clarity

A clear structure helps both you and your audience. Organize your talk by applying the following arrangement;

Hook – this initial part of your talk should take between 30 to 60 seconds. Begin with a vivid image, shocking fact, or a one-line story that triggers curiosity.

Set the stakes – why should your audience care? Make the benefit immediate, emotional, and personal.

Three core points – restrict your talk/presentation to 3 main beats – this makes it easier for your listeners to follow and more memorable as well.

Evidence and example – use a demo, short story, or data point to make each beat tangible.

Conclude with a call to action (CTA) – explain to your audience the next step – this could range from buying a book, visiting your site, to joining a club.

Deepen Influence with Storytelling

Most creators already know how to tell a good story. This is the skill you need to transfer onto the stage;

Don’t summarize, craft a scene – paint moments filled with sensory detail so that your audience feels part and parcel of the action.

Character-driven framing – even a non-fiction narrative gains traction when centered around a relatable person.

Reveal, don’t tell – build your presentation toward a twist or insight; let your listeners discover meaning together with you.
